The Weird Way Fondness Works
Two things I currently count as negative aspects of my office are the excessively high rat population in the walls, and the smell of food cooking that seeps through those venerable and thin walls. If I am getting complaints out, I also feel a little sad when the plywood yellows due to sunlight. (Though it is still worth not having coated the plywood at all, because that would have been hard work and because it still breathes a lovely wood smell at hot and cold times.) But both the (admittedly adorable) crawling sounds and the cooking smells will eventually be gone. I might miss them when my brain defaults to focusing on my variable-quality thoughts. And when the cooking in particular is gone, a culinary and social institution of the community will have also gone away. That will be sad. I will embrace these things for now.
